When Ed and I first became engaged, we didn’t understand the challenges that the two of us would face in the months that lay ahead.

Aside from the usual pressures that a couple encounters with the planning of a big wedding, we brought to the table enormous conflicts that would and did threaten our future together. In the course of our journey to the altar, we had to contend with weak finances, overcoming Ed’s new recovery process from alcohol abuse and the greatest hurdle of all was learning how to communicate respectfully with each other. Both of us had loads of emotional baggage that we were bringing into our upcoming marriage and neither of us knew how to leap the hurdles of the past so that we could embrace our future together.

With the gracious and determined assistance of Dr. Maria Stevens, we discovered the strengths that we had as a couple and as individuals and were able to use those positives to overcome our differences. In two emotionally charged months of twice weekly sessions, Ed and I grew closer together than we ever could have imagined and on June 30, 2012 we joined our lives together as husband and wife.

Without the support and professional expertise that Dr. Stevens provided us, it would have been difficult if not impossible for us to change our behaviors and attitudes toward ourselves and each other. Thanks to her, we will never take for granted the mutual love and respect that is needed to grow and maintain a healthy relationship and marriage. Dr. Steven’s focus on financial, personal, spiritual and mental growth gave us a changed perspective on who we can be together as a couple and as individuals.
